Ivan Toms
The Ivan Toms Centre for Health was the first Health4Men clinic, founded in 2009 and is named after the late Ivan Toms, an openly gay doctor and conscientious objector during the apartheid era.
The centre provides a range of comprehensive services, including HIV screening and treatment, provision of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and STI screening and treatment. The centre is a key training institution for service providers in South Africa and the African region on MSM health.
Services
HIV Related Services
Free and confidential HIV screening in a discreet and relaxed environment. If you do test positive you can also expect to receive CD4 testing and counselling.
Free antiretroviral treatment therapy. Once you’re on ARVs your healthcare workers will continue to monitor your health and will be available to address any side-effects you may experience. If you test HIV+ you can commence free treatment immediately.
STI Related Services
Free and confidential screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and genital warts.
PrEP
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a daily drug that can be taken by people who don’t have HIV to prevent them from being infected with the virus. It can prevent HIV infection even if the virus enters the body through an exchange of sexual fluids or from an injection. Find out how to get your PrEP for free.
PEP
You can access PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) if you’ve had a high risk exposure to HIV infection, provided that you test HIV negative and that you commence the treatment within 72 hours of the exposure to the virus.
