Key Populations
Anova is supporting access to competent health services for Key Populations, specifically men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender people and people who inject drugs, promoting a sex-positive attitude among healthcare workers. We do this by training and mentoring clinical and non-clinical staff to deliver competent services; and by social mobilisation through our outreach activities and communication resources. Anova’s Health4Men Initiative is one of the first projects on the continent to draw considerable attention to and address the sexual health needs of MSM in the context of HIV. We have trained over 3 000 health workers in the public sector to provide prejudice-free competent services to MSM. Nurses and doctors at over 260 clinics, across all provinces, have been mentored by our highly skilled team to ensure that MSM receive excellent treatment and care regarding their sexual health, including HIV-related services.Sexual health is the ability to embrace and enjoy our sexuality. It is an important part of our physical and emotional health.Being sexually healthy means:
- Understanding that sexuality is a natural part of life and involves more than sexual behaviour
- Recognising and respecting the sexual rights we all share
- Having access to sexual health information, education, and care
- Making an effort to prevent unintended pregnancies and STIs and seek care and treatment when needed
- Being able to experience sexual pleasure, satisfaction, and intimacy when desired
- Being able to communicate about sexual health with others including sexual partners and healthcare providers
