Public Health Analyst – Advanced HIV Disease Project (Gauteng)

1. Main Job Purpose

Anova Health Institute is implementing an Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) project aimed at improving the prevention, identification, monitoring, and management of AHD through improved guideline implementation, clinical decision support, clinician learning, and client engagement. The project will support implementation of South Africa’s updated National Consolidated HIV Guidelines, including the newly introduced AHD chapter, in two demonstration districts.

Working with the Public Health Specialist and Technical Advisor for Public Health, the Public Health Analyst will be responsible for monitoring and evaluation activities throughout the lifecycle of the project.

2. Key Performance Areas

Key Performance Areas Tasks and Activities
Programme evaluation and learning
  • Design, conduct and report on Anova’s AHD programme and support activities
  • Collaborate with programme staff to identify evaluation priorities
  • Write protocols and obtain ethical and other approval from HRECs and regulatory bodies
  • Implement protocols, including overseeing data collection and managing data
  • Generate and disseminate reports
Data collection and analysis for strategic planning and to inform programme
  • Plan data collection methods and design tools to answer questions of programmatic interest
  • Oversee data collection and manage data and data quality
  • Analysis, interpretation and visualisation of data to identify gaps in programme implementation and inform decision-making
  • Give input into content and design of routine monitoring and reporting
  • Support the development and dissemination of dashboards for AHD and programme monitoring
Qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Tool design and testing based on programme requirements and protocols
  • Oversee data collection and management, including quality checks
  • Contribute to analysis of data, including coding and development of themes
Dissemination
  • Produce and disseminate reports documenting programme activities and innovations
  • Academic dissemination e.g. publications and conferences
  • Other dissemination e.g. briefs and infographics; writing for lay audiences/ website/ media
Function as a technical expert
  • Attend relevant meetings and contribute to the strategic direction of evaluation and learning within the programme
  • Provide technical support and capacity-building on data analysis and use within Anova and in the Department of Health
  • Identify opportunities for training and development and attend relevant meetings/ seminars etc.

3. Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in appropriate discipline (Public Health, Epidemiology or closely related science)
  • 2-3 years’ experience in the health sector, HIV/TB advantageous
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g. SPSS/STATA/R) required, REDCap advantageous
  • Ability to summarise, interpret and visualise complex data
  • Scientific report writing and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of South African health services
  • Experience supporting public sector/NGO health programmes
